Christmas in New Orleans - Angie Baer Photography Style...

One of my favourite things to do is travel!  I can’t get enough of it!  Fortunately for me, my hubby Matt shares this love.

We have had the opportunity to do quite a bit of traveling together.  I love learning about each place that I go to – checking out the sights and sounds, meeting the people, experiencing the food and culture.

This past December, we had the pleasure of going to New Orleans, Louisiana.  A city so rich in history, culture, and  heritage. Prior to leaving, I was very intrigued to see how they had rebuilt from the devastating hurricane, Katrina that hit 5 years ago.

We arrived on Christmas Eve in time to enjoy a delicious beignet at Cafe du Monde and to do a little bit of exploring.  “Who Dat?” quickly became my favourite expression!

In the evening we headed out for a Christmas Eve Bonfire.  The bonfire is how the locals light the way for Pere Noel.  This is a tradition that has been going on for at least a century.  The bonfires are around 20 feet tall (6 metres) and are made from willow trees and cane reed as we learnt from our tour guide and they go on for miles.  It is quite a sight to see!

While there we attended a cooking class at The New Orleans School of Cooking and had some delicious red beans & rice, corn bread, pecan pie and pralines.  YUMMY!  And our chef, Kevin was extremely entertaining.

We also went on a photography walking tour (how does a photographer pass that up!)  It was a great way to explore the city and take some photos!  It was interesting to see the water lines on some of the buildings from the hurricane but for the most part a lot of the tourist area (the French Quarter was not as badly affected) but there is still a tremendous amount of rebuilding to be done in the residential areas.

New Orleans was a wonderful city to visit and a great way to enjoy Christmas.  I hope to have the chance to go back soon!
